Seattle Coffee Talk: An Interview with the Health Department

Continuing our series in the coffee business.

Coffee may make our world go round, but there are a lot of unsung heroes that help keep us safer and healthier.

Meet Phil Wyman, who is with the King County Health Department. Mr. Wyman and the department he works for inspects a variety of food businesses in King County. He’s certainly one of those unsung heroes.

I recently interviewed Mr. Wyman to discuss the role of the health department when it comes to coffee businesses in the region. He has a wealth of information that is useful for new and veteran coffee shop owners, and believe his expertise adds to our on-going coffee business series we are doing here at SCS.

Before buying or setting up a coffee business and investing tons of money and resources into a facility – you should talk to the Health Department first to make sure it’s going to work. It’s easier to make modifications on paper than in a facility. Your menu is the “key” to your success: it may add a level of complexity that affects what kind of a facility and how much space you are going to need.

We discuss quite a bit of information in this interview, but more for more information, check out the following website: King County Food Businesses
