When Upper Crust Bakery and Cocoa and Cream closed in mid-2012, Magnolia residents lost a couple of great places to get coffee and treats.
In a leap of faith, husband and wife team, Meghan and Anthony Hargreaves responded and opened Finn’s Bakery and Café, a charming café on Magnolia’s ‘Main Street’ which is actually called “McGraw Street.”
I sampled their tasty almond croissant – which was perfect! – along with a piping hot coffee (They serve Stumptown). They have their own in-house bakery and serve fresh croissants, cookies, and other baked goods to the delight of their neighbors.
“We’ve never done anything like this before and it’s been great. We live in Magnolia, when (the previous bakery) closed down we said let’s go for it… We took a leap of faith,’ Meghan told me.
The location has been a bakery in Magnolia since the 1950s, so I’m sure Magnolia residents can appreciate the new bakery and café opening up. “We live five minutes away and we didn’t want to drive to Ballard to get a cup of coffee,” Meghan added.
I must be honest, I don’t get out to Magnolia very much. It’s one of Seattle’s gems where you get the feeling you’re really in a small town. With small Mom & Pop bookstores, community banks, and plenty of street parking – it’s easy to forget what city you’re in. I mean, seriously, when was the last time you didn’t have to worry about street parking in Seattle?
The last time I visited I tried their quiche and strawberry csone along with their americano, which was a delightful combination. I’m always happy about great customer service here: the staff is courteous and super-friendly.
Finn’s Bakery and Café just also starting serving lunch with a rotating menu. If you’re visiting, pay them a visit and check out Magnolia’s Bookstore – just next door. You’ll be glad you did.
